Border Crossing Issues for Non-residents of Canada

One issue that we, as lodge owners catering to non-residents of Canada are continually asked about is the question of eligibility to enter Canada if you have a DUI.  Therefore we are providing information and links to Immigration Canada publications that address this issue and should be able to provide answers (or contact information) to your questions.

Under the Canadian Immigration Act, individuals with criminal records may be inadmissible to Canada, either as tourists or as potential immigrants.  In many U.S. jurisdictions a DUI offense is considered a misdemeanour.  This is not the case in Canada.  Under Canadian statutes a DUI (impaired driving) is a criminal offense and therefore if you have been convicted of a DUI - regardless of how far in the past the offense occurred, you may not be eligible to enter Canada.
